Many accidents occur in public places, for example, you may have slipped in a supermarket/shop, tripped over an uneven street pavement or fallen down a hotel staircase. Many people regard these slip or trip accidents as trivial but if you are the victim then it is far from trivial, especially if you are unable to work and care for family members.
In most cases, it is usually someone’s responsibility to keep a particular place safe for the public – usually the owner or tenant of the premises or the local authority. You can also claim for accidents caused by potholes if you were a cyclist or motorist and the pothole caused your injuries.
Property owners and local authorities are under a duty to ensure that the areas under their control are safe to the public and that all reasonable steps have been taken to ensure their safety.
